This VW sauna is one of the first mobile saunas documented on the web, and possibly the most famous. We actually lost track of it for a few years and couldn’t find any pictures, but we’ve found some new ones so we know it’s still heating up the good folks in finland. It was built by the Helskinki auto technical students of TAK in 1982 and has been rebuilt several times.

No jalat on viileät, sanoo Kalle. Se riippuu siitä, missä kohtaa kohtaa saunaa istuu, Matti selittää. Hyvät löylyt on, vakuuttavat molemmat.
Kalle ja Juha rentoutuvat terassilla saunan jälkeen. Sauna on lämmennyt tunnin ja asteita on jo 120.

Firetruck Sauna Ford 600

Nothing beats a nice hot sauna after a hard day of fighting hot fires. Except the cold water hose-down. These Estonian firemen are serious, they even have a party schematic! Check the heated rooftop deck, projector screen, two saunas, hose truck, hot tub, and outhouse.

Shipping Container SaunaBox
Toronto, Canada
castordesign.camocoloco.com

Sauna Box, the designchild of Canadian trio Castor Canadensis (Metalsmith Designer Kevin Goddard, Stonecarver Brian Richer and Photographer Designer Ryan Taylor) is a portable sauna designed within a custom shipping container built from sculptural steel. The sauna box can be transported to any location, needs minimum site preparation, is water tight, has a wood-fired stove and is powered by solar panels. The interior contains carved stone stools, a stone sink, custom wood and metal work.

sauna box
“The Sauna Box is dialectical investigation of the common shipping container and traditional sauna. Through this tension it addresses built environment issues minimum impact, sustainability, and presents them in an accessible, usable form.” -prefab saunas are run of the mill but this is different-”

Each Box is site specific and custom built. The outer skin is constructed of Cor-Ten steel, a material that withstands saltwater and used as sculptural material. This utilitarian, sculptural aesthetic is continued on the inside with hand made objects such as carved stone stools, stone sink, custom wood and metal work.” Website is a work in progress but has a cool movie and soundtrack by the band, Broken Social Scene-hugs for that.

sauna box
This design is based on the utilitarian aspect of shipping containers: utility and portability rolled up in its own convenient modular package. While this particular container is not a true shipping container (its constructed of corten steel, well known for its sculptural properties and stable rust finish) it is still built to be transported to your custom site. For the heat source, a wood fired stove is built into the box and power is supplied by solar panels (good for when you are out in the wilderness and
living off the grid.) Clever wood, stone, and ironwork can be added to customize the sauna while paying homage to natures surroundings (note the beaver-whittled stool.)

Uniteam Container Sauna

The company Uniteam also offers shipping container saunas. The same company can also offer matching shipping container chapels, pubs and jails (in that order?). No dialectic investigations required.

Mobile and portable sauna solution. Quick deployable and movable sauna container.

Uniteam.org/shelter/

Uniteam is happy to provide its customers with the option of their own portable sauna shelter.

uniteam sauna container
The container can be a fully equipped sauna. It can be provided with integrated power and heating system as well as water storage system as well as music and lightning infrastructure.

Can be shipped including chairs, tables and all necessary equipment. The client is most welcome to suggest his own interior design.

banya train

Another one for the Russian Banya, this design from trains serving during the great patriotic war where they were used for bathing and sanitary purposes. A Russian war generally means way more death and misery than the average person is used to, but I can try to imagine how nice it would be to have this baby roll up on those narrow guage railways.

Mir Kosmobanya

Mir Space Sauna

Mir Space Sauna

MIR, the Russian space station, included a banya (sauna) for cosmonauts built by Rocket and Space Corporation Energia. When in operation, this sauna had an altitude of 254 km and an orbital velocity of 26,000 km/h.

Space Saunamilitaryphotos.netABBYY- Yes it was much funny things with ISS development. But I would like to tell
about space sauna.

My father (Komolov Vladimir Viktorovich) was one of developers of shower and sauna for space station. Actually it was project for his graduation from institute. Leter when he came to Energia it became his job to implement both on space station. What he with developers team did for Mir space station.

So cosmonauts enjoyed not only shower but also good sauna during their missions. But one day bosses decided that sauna consumes too much energy and ordered to dismount it from station.

Cosmonauts of current mission said: no way, f***. Bosses were very angry but what can you do when thing which you want to destroy flies 300 kilometers above you. So when mission returned to earth and next team arrived to station they issued this order once again.

Next team said: umm… ok… after all experiments will be done…. Guess what happened. In result they sabotaged order too

So when third mission were about to launch military man was included who received strict orders to dissassemble sauna at any cost And he did this job.

So in turn my father was very angry and dissapointed .

TERENCE SMITH: Mir served as a temporary home for 104 crew members. Most importantly, Mir hasprovided a window on what it might be like to live in space on a day-to-day basis — living in space, that is, in quarters not much bigger than a
greyhound bus. No one knows that better than Cosmonaut Valery Polyakov, who spent more continuous time in space than anyone: 438 consecutive days– sometimes taking advantage of a small sauna on board.

Recovering From Spacespacedaily

The human record for space habitability is a fourteen month stint on the Russian MIR space station. When filmmaker James Cameron asked the record-holding cosmonaut in Moscow, how long it took to feel okay again after returning to Earth?, the flippant answer was “One vodka, one sauna.”

When combined with the preflight training, extensive exercise regime on board a space station and postflight recovery, a three year mission to Mars might take years to even a decade from human preparation to a healthy recovery. Such a lengthy stint exceeds most forms of voluntary military service.

The cosmonaut paused and reconsidered his recovery time when answering Cameron’s question, “About six months.”

Valery Polyakov

space.comAfter four months of sponge baths and freeze-dried space food, though, Frank Culbertson said he’s looking forward to “a real hot shower” and a “nice bowl of ice cream.” Vladmir Dezhurov is yearning for a warm sauna and Mikhail Turin said, “a big glass of cold beer would be fine.”

Russia’s 2nd cosmonaut, Gierman Titov, dies in saunaCNN

September 21, 2000MOSCOW (Reuters) — Cosmonaut Gierman Titov, Russia’s second man in space and the first person to spend more than a day in orbit, has been found dead in his home sauna, police said on Thursday. He was 65.

Space Training at Russia’s Star City Includes Saunaincredible-adventures.com

“Once complete I EVA back to the entrance hatch and we call it a day. Then the doc whisks me away and hands me his homebrewed cup of herb tea. I get undressed and the doc insists on me taking a sauna. Well, I handle cool temps normally quite well, but the opportunity of having a sauna in Russia can’t be let go by. ” – A. Forrer

NASA Space Research Includes Saunasfhs.eget.net

In 1946, Viherjuuri and his friends acquired a small sauna which they opened to the Finnish Sauna Society’s growing membership. In 1952, they built a larger sauna complex near Helsinki on the island of Vaskiniemi which included two savusaunas, two vented saunas, and an experimental sauna where medical research could be conducted. NASA used their facilities in 1959 to study the effects of re-entry heat on the human body.

Chunky Monkey Floating Sauna

“Chunky Monkey” Floating Sauna

The Floating Sauna Company is a family business started in 1999 in the heart of one of Canada’s favorite cottage areas, Haliburton County in Ontario.

Our first floating sauna was designed and built by the company’s founder Don Toporowski, a professional engineer. Because of a steep shoreline, building restrictions and a wide circle of friends on the lake, Don needed a sauna that not only floated off the shore, but that he could take to visit friends on the lake.

scrap metal

This first sauna was called The Chunky Monkey and was built using two surplus fuel tanks from an F-18 fighter for flotation. This craft had a 50 hp outboard motor for propulsion, a rooftop deck, a bbq and fridge, a changeroom and a sauna that seated eight happy people comfortably. The Chunky Monkey remains Don’s personal sauna craft and has aged beautifully. Some of his best memories on the lake are of motoring out to the middle of the lake in a light rain with the kids, having a really hot sauna then jumping off the rooftop diving platform in the cool lake water. Others love anchoring their floating sauna in the middle of the lake and using it as a central point to waterski, boat or fish from. It increases the season for all water activities substantially allowing you to enjoy cottage sports in the early spring and well into the fall without feeling cold all the time.

ChunkyMonkey

Today The Floating Sauna Company’s products are still custom designed for each customer to ensure that the design meets their unique requirements whether it is as a party vessel, remote ski platform, diving tower, personal sauna/spa space, luxury fishing vessel or anything else that can be imagined. We use custom aluminum pontoons and frames and fine cedar to provide lasting beauty, maneoverability and superior quality. Our crafts meet all requirements to qualify for Canadian Coast Guard Certification.

If you don’t feel the need to take your sauna out on the lake or to the neighbours, the saunas are available without propulsion so that you may simply float your sauna at the shore allowing quick and refreshing dips in the lake, rather than trudging along the shore as is so commonly done.

If you would like to discuss the commissioning of your own floating or self-propelled sauna contact Don Toporowski for a free consultation.

M/S GloskÄr

M/S GLOSKÄR

M/S GLOSKÄR

www.strandcamping.com/eng/gloskar_index.htm
M/S Gloskär is a registered rental boat weighing around 36 tonnes which traffics the Larsmo lake. On board is a sauna that can hold around 20 persons, and a grill cabin for around 20-25 persons. M/S Gloskär is rented with a crew who takes the group on an unforgettable archipelageal experience. The boat is built from itŽs own blueprints, and is guaranteed the only of it’s kind in the world.

You will be able to enjoy sauna in the best of finnish archipelago, and enjoy a wonderful meal as close to nature as you can come!

During the winter, M/S Gloskär can be rented for (example) a company party. It will be a combination of a private sauna, and a nice evening around the fire in the grill cottage. M/S Gloskär is then docked right by Café 7 broar.

We are also able to cater groups, but own food and drink is allowed.

This is how it works during summer

M/S Gloskär is most suitable for groups of up to around 15 persons. For your understanding, you are here able to get an idea of the concept for a typical evening cruise with a group.

The group gets aboard by the Café 7 broar’s dock. We head out to “Gloskärsfjärden”.

After half an hour we drop anchor and the sauna-bathing can begin.

During the time we head to the café and bring back catering food (if you wish) and set up a nice meal for you.

After a while, when everyone’s happy – we steer back. After around 4 hours, the group is back on dry land.

…and during winter

The sauna and the grill cabin can be reserved after regular times for private use.

Take a dip in the ice-cold water, and warm up in the sauna, then enjoy a
nice bite to eat at the grill cabin…
